The way we (don’t) talk about race

The way we (don’t) talk about race is the way we (don’t) talk about violence in America. The way we (don’t) talk about race is the way we (don’t) talk about mental health in America. The way we (don’t) talk about race is the way we (don’t) talk about ANYTHING.

We have already chosen sides. So we dig in. For every Ferguson story on Facebook or on a news site comes another story about blacks killing whites. Then, back come more stories about whites killing blacks… then… more statistics and stories about… you get the picture.

We’re not even talking past each other. We’re YELLING past each other.

It’s the American way these days. We’re crazed in the social media realm, which only feeds the media because we don’t have any real journalists anymore who actually get off their fat rear ends and go DO a story (unless they’re going to be featured prominently IN the story).

I have actually tried engaging a couple of people I have on Facebook in private conversations. They are not interested.

We just want to yell.

So, America, let’s just (not) keep the conversation going.
