We Interrupt This Joyous Season to Bring You a Prophetic Word!

Amos just ruins Christmas. Who let this guy in?

Here we are feeling good about billions of dollars spent over Black Friday, and here comes Amos.

Truthfully, we need Amos. He is there reminding us that no matter how good the stock market is, or how good the sales are, the priorities of the Kingdom don’t necessarily follow the Dow Jones Industrial Average. Are we doing Kingdom work?

For Amos, it was not pretty. The rich were still heavily taxing the poor so they could build nice stone houses. God won’t stand for it!

11 Truly, because you crush the weak,
      and because you tax their grain,
   you have built houses of carved stone,
      but you won’t live in them;
   you have planted pleasant vineyards,
      but you won’t drink their wine.
12 I know how many are your crimes,
      and how numerous are your sins—
   afflicting the righteous,
      taking money on the side,
      turning away the poor
      who seek help.
13 Therefore, the one who is wise
will keep silent in that time;
      it is an evil time. (Amos 5:11-13, CEB)

God offers a way out:

14 Seek good and not evil,
      that you may live;
   and so the LORD,
   the God of heavenly forces,
      will be with you just as you have said.
15 Hate evil, love good,
      and establish justice at the city gate.
Perhaps the LORD God of heavenly forces
      will be gracious
      to what is left of Joseph. (Amos 5:14-15, CEB)

But you have to love that word perhaps.

Enough already! Get rid of the prophet and let’s get back to our regularly scheduled shopping! And whatever you do… don’t think too much about weightier matters this Christmas!
