What we do when this is over

In talking to my church yesterday, I went over a few things we WILL do when this crazy election is over. This has challenged me more this year than any other, so I have indeed prayed through on these matters and will follow my own advice.

WE WILL PRAY

I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people— for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. (1 Tim. 2:1,2)

We will pray FOR… we will not pray “against.” Whether it was George Bush or Barack Obama, it was always irritating to listen to believers talk about how they didn’t pray for… or prayed against the president, or prayed for his demise. Not us as believers. Not anymore. May it never be.

You think this won’t test me on Wednesday? 😉

WE WILL RESPECT

I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people— for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. (1 Tim. 2:1,2)

It would be nice to return to some sense of decorum. If other Americans won’t do it, why not believers? Why NOT keep things with respectful titles? Could we please say “PRESIDENT Bush” and not “W”? Could we please say “PRESIDENT Obama” and not “Barack” or “Hussein”?

We may not agree, but we can respect. Why not us?

I know I have seen the sentiment over abortion, etc. It’s true. There are deep areas of disagreement and debate. But Daniel had his city obliterated by Nebuchadnezzar, which probably meant he had family members killed by that man. The temple had been destroyed and Nebuchadnezzar had mocked the Jews by putting temple sacred item into the temple of his god. Yet, Daniel acted with respect to the king. He learned to bless and not curse.

WE WILL WORSHIP

In the end, we serve a King and his kingdom. Our ultimate allegiance isn’t earthly. It is heavenly. Jesus is Lord and we worship. Jesus is Lord… Caesar is not. The Kingdom of God is eternal. America is wonderful… not eternal.

So, we worship. We serve. We pray. We respect.
