Of course MY view of the issue is absolutely correct

Pick this week’s hot topic (or one of several that have exploded this week) and we have simply managed to yell at one another.

Every one of us are capable of grabbing our particular issues, holding on for dear life, and demanding 100 percent allegiance… and it goes all across the board. I have not really found ANY “voice” exempt from that charge. World Vision, Supreme Court, you name it… the “other” side is absolutely wrong, and it just didn’t matter which “side” was speaking.

It is clear we are not interest in discussion. We are not interested in “dialogue.” We are interested in yelling at the top of our lungs and making sure OUR view is held out as the correct one.

Every point of view this week is in danger of creating (or perpetuating) and brand new legalism. And then we will crack each other over the head with our “rightness.”

Each point of view bellowed out this week has the opportunity to make any “side” into a Pharisee. And we need to hear this warning from Jesus again:

You ignore God’s commandment while holding on to rules created by humans and handed down to you. (Mark 7:8)

It is my heartfelt prayer that I could talk individually with key people and simply BEG them… every one of them… to back off the vitriolic statements, shut it down for at least a week… and pray. Not intercession. Not imprecatory prayers, wishing for the destruction of the “other” side. Listening.

In all of this… no matter what the “side”… we are really missing that simple saying this week: “God gave us two ears and one mouth for a reason.”
