The Confidence We Need

Hebrews 9-10 lay out the work of Christ. The Old Testament system was in full view. It was a lot of work for very little hope. Christ comes and does this work once for all. This is a huge statement for a people who had to go through a lot of ritual every year. In Christ’s one perfect sacrifice he has made perfect forever those who are being made holy (10:14).

We should not ignore this. It is to our peril that we ignore this incredible work of Christ.

What is more, we should be bold. Israel in the previous era was fearful. At Sinai, they backed away from the mountain. When the Day of Atonement would come, they would draw back in fear. Now, the writer of Hebrews says, the invitation is to draw near. The invitation is to come boldly. He who promised is faithful.

As we as a church work our way through “Eat This Book” this summer, let’s be encouraged by this passage in Hebrews because this is what is happening among us!

23 Let’s hold on to the confession of our hope without wavering, because the one who made the promises is reliable.

24 Let’s also think about how to motivate each other to show love and to do good works. 25 Don’t stop meeting together with other believers, which some people have gotten into the habit of doing. Instead, encourage each other, especially as you see the day drawing near. (Heb. 10:23-25, CEB)
