In a year we have learned nothing
A composition of lament. (I don’t know how to write a poem.) In a year… Ahmaud Arbery… Breonna Taylor… George Floyd… and more… WE HAVE LEARNED NOTHING.

Our hard-hearted stance in the church
In a time when the American Church should have fallen to its knees in repentance before God, we chose to double down on our stiff-necked responses and tried to hold onto what little power that remained.

Evangelical reckoning
Staying silent does me no good. It is long past time for white evangelicals to call out injustice, bigotry, violent rhetoric, disparaging language, racism, misogyny, abuse of power, and the idolatry of Christian nationalism in their own communities, even if doing so comes at a cost. Thabyite Anyabwile puts into concise language where my formation has taken me these past few years. Give a…

Our hearts are set on the wrong things
I know I was reading Jeremiah 4-5 years ago. I have long known the grief I’ve sensed concerning the American Church. The grief I feel now is much deeper.

Call out racism
I am all too guilty of reposting MLK quotes on MLK Day. We are far too quick to give empty platitudes to a man we’d ridicule today as a felon because he spent so much time in jail.

We are not healed
There has been a lot of analysis… and a lot of “what did you expect”… and a lot of “how could this happen”… since January 6.

This IS Us
All kinds of people have said in the last 24 hours, as so many good people have tried to say in other dark hours, “This is not who we are.” With all due respect, with the events of January 6, 2021 etched in our brains, this IS us. It is who we are because we keep repeating it.
