Founder of Fox News, Roger Ailes, famously said, “People don’t want to be informed; they want to feel informed.” Likewise, today’s culture warring evangelicals don’t want to be righteous; they want to feel righteous. And they will abundantly reward any politician, cable news personality, pastor, or pundit who supplies this feeling. Christian Nationalism, and its growing flock of political pigeons, fills this need perfectly.

Dan, you’ve drawn me into a conversation that I’ve been avoiding having, even within myself, but OK, here goes nothin’. I read your “Holy Post” blogger’s piece that you linked on this post of yours. It’s very interesting and insightful. But here’s my beef with focusing only on the rightwing conservatives in our country, even focusing only on the rightwing conservative evangelical self-proclaimed Christians, the focus is always too narrow. EVERYBODY wants to feel righteous rather than actually be righteous. The Holy Post has people in it that are like me. They love Jesus and considered themselves “evangelical” and then… KABOOM. Everything before had been “blame the liberals” and we can do “but what about…” all day long. But this is about critiquing a movement that A. we were a part of and then found out it wasn’t quite what we thought, and B. really isn’t doing the intellectual work on what “Christian Nationalism” is and will settle for dictators they believe will do their bidding. It certainly exists “on the other side” as well. And I’ve critiqued them long and hard as well. You’ve joined in the 3rd quarter of the game… I had a whole 2 quarters before this. 🙂
I thank God for you, Brother! I’m more like you and your “Holy Post” friend than you may believe. But I’m determined NOT to fight, not with the Left, not with the Right, not with fellow maybe believers, not with those who are probably unbelievers. I’m sixty six years old and a veteran of the so-called Culture Wars who has lived long enough to see nothing come of all the blood, sweat, and tears. Keep fighting the good fight, Dan, if you feel the Holy Ghost calling you there.
