I’ve not been very good at reading fiction. I read constantly, but drift more toward theology and history/biography. I’ve learned over the years to read fiction I truly like and not torture myself on skipping things I can’t really “get into” all that well, like James Joyce.
The most helpful thing I’ve utilized in recent years is Audible. I have found I’m far more engaged listening to fiction than in reading it. The narration really helps.
As I look at my reading list thus far this year, I’m amazed that almost half the books have been fiction. I can also remember ones I heard.
I’m not sophisticated in my fiction reading. I get into mysteries and political thrillers. Nelson DeMille’s character, John Corey, is a fascinating protagonist, but it is even better when I’m listening to Scott Brick narrate the novels. He has Corey’s attitude and accent down. I can picture John Corey when Brick is reading it.
I found I can get into other genres at times if the narration is good. I’m currently listening to The Remains of the Day and for some reason find myself perfectly engaged in the story.
So, how do you “read?” What do you like in fiction?
And for you dystopian fans… help me out. What draws you to that genre? I’d love to hear from you.
