16 For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. (John 3:16,17)
The most well-known verse on the planet. The most misunderstood and hard to figure out passage.
I walk through this passage with regularity in my Bible reading and I am mystified even more every time. The mysterious reality I walk in today with this passage is this:
Eternal life is not about “getting saved” and then when “this life” is over I step magically into eternity. Eternal life is about stepping into the eternal stream of God.
The eternal is NOW. It has always been. It will always be.
I am not invited to accept Jesus “now” so I can live with him “then.” I am invited to step into what is eternal now so my life becomes enveloped in Kingdom life. Eternity becomes my reality. Here. Now. Not “over there and then.”
The invitation is to allow the Spirit to wash me and renew me to handle this eternal invitation. It is an invitation to share in the life of God. Not some other time.
