Violence

Yet another mass killing in our nation. Near Milwaukee it was a Sikh temple.

The question of my heart today isn’t about “gun control” or other legislation. The question of my heart is, “When will we finally get tired of this and DO something about it?”

This is beyond legislation. These events open up the soul of our nation and reveal some ugly things. It should invite a conversation or at least some reflection. It doesn’t. So, my question is: when will we finally have that reflection and conversation?

Violence is in the DNA of our culture. Almost every time we have had a major conflict, we have decided the outcome with some sort of violence. From the very beginning that has been our mode of dealing with huge conflicts.

Slavery? We had a civil war. Britain ended it decades before without a war.

I don’t think it’s enough to say, “Well, we’re not as bad as… ” (and then list off some other countries). That’s the attitude of the Pharisees.

As believers, couldn’t we offer something different to this conversation? (Well, when we finally have a conversation…)

Instead of going to grab our NRA cards this time, or pull out the Bill of Rights, or rush new gun legislation into place… would it not be possible to just STOP, reflect, and (here it is… ) repent?

Well, I doubt we’ll have any pause like that, but events keep piling up and I keep asking questions of myself.

Onward to our very predictable responses today and this week. Carry on.

This is sadly true. My Canadian friends also (regularly) remind me that they obtained national freedom without bloodshed while we chose the path of war. It does seem to be indicative of our culture.

    1. Good point. And there’s India… Australia… Okay, this is getting embarrassing.

  2. It is sad to think about how we have allowed violence into our homes. The NFL, Ultimate Fighting, video games, movies. They are filled with horrific things…violence. The aim of each one is to inflict pain, real or virtual onto another. It is time of Christians to declare to the world that our homes will be different. “As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.” I have been on a couple year journey of stepping away from football, especially pro. I no longer play video games and rarely watch movies. My home will seek peace and that which pleases Him. Repentence needs to be the action of the church. Acknowledge our part, confess it, and move away from it. Can we do it?

    1. Messing with football… I didn’t mean to propose any actual SOLUTIONS! 😉

  3. We are rooted in a culture of action. Reflection and repentance, though the best action to take, is not out front enough. This is why our cultural heroes are Stallone and Ah-h-nold while the Bible sits in a place of honor on our shelves but the binding is rarely creased.

    1. Our Bibles and our knees need more creases.
