The Weeds

I am preaching this Sunday on the parable of the wheat and the weeds. What is so challenging for me is to understand a couple of things:

1. Jesus works this all out in the end. We are so busy trying to work it out NOW. We want to identify the weeds and pull them. Jesus says, “Let this go. I’ve got it.”

2. This is another passage that is tough to deal with if you have a universalist bent. Of course, it CAN be dealt with, but I think the results would be pretty ugly.

But overall, what I am learning is we must live as salt and light IN this world. We live among the wheat AND the weeds. What gets sorted out in the end is NOT up to us. It is HIS Kingdom… and it’s going to come in complete fullness and deal with this stuff whether we like it or not.

So, what are you? Wheat? Weeds? Or, we can have MORE fun and say someone ELSE is a weed! ๐Ÿ˜‰

Dan, something that seems to be missed more and more when this parable is studied/preached is the fact that the weeds in question were actually darnel, a weed that was nearly impossible to tell apart from wheat until harvest time came, when the difference would become obvious. Don’t know if you want to look into that…

    1. Yep. It’s in my message prep. Thanks, Gary.

  4. Was wondering, do you have Snodgrass’ book Stories With Intent? If not, it is a mist have for work in the parables. This is a good post otherwise…

  5. Thanks for the recommendation.

  6. Thanks for posting this! The same verse came up in the sermon last sunday (the sermon was supposedly about predestination but my pastor likes rabbit trails) and it grabbed my attention since I had just read it on your blog.

    1. Glad it was a help to you!
