Disappointed

It all started innocently enough. The Assemblies of God issued an updated paper on creation in August of this year. That didn’t sit too well with a man leading a ministry called “Answers in Genesis.”

The paper, in my view, was a decent one because it opened up the conversation so we have grace in the discussion on creation. However, a literal 6-day, 24-hour day creation view seems to have become a new orthodoxy. I heard today that the committee that wrote the position paper for the AOG has been called back together and is to review their work.

Even more disappointing to me is the people who called for this review lead the district where I am a pastor.

When did orthodoxy change? I need to get that memo. Ken Ham says, “Jump,” and we say, “How high?” Is that how it’s working these days? Did someone elect him pope? And when did the verse get inserted that “Thou must believe in a literal 24-hour, 6-day creation or thou shalt be banished to hell?” (Perhaps that is in 2 Hesitations or something.)

I had a conversation recently with a scholar who said something very bold. In effect, if the evidence for evolution were proven correct tomorrow it would do NOTHING to effect his faith in Jesus Christ. Yet, for those in Ken Ham’s camp, to believe in anything OTHER than a literal 24-hour, 6-day creation would seem to condemn you to hell.

NOTE: That says nothing to my view of creation. It simply means I know God created this world and if someone else believes that without holding to a literal 24-hour, 6-day creation, I have a little grace left in me to hear what that view may say.

Can I realize that my hope is built on nothing less than Jesus’ blood and righteousness? Dare I believe that? Anyone with me?

  1. I am pastor. I am not into “new earth” vs “old earth” camps. I am into God created…. no matter what.

  2. I hope this issue doesn’t become big here in Australia. The AOG college I’m studying at has a much more relaxed stance on study, research and stance of non salvivic essentials.

Creation would be one of them. By making one form of Creation a salvivic issue, which is really what it is all about… I think a major rethink of what the Cross is all about needs to take place. ‘

My faith in Christ has nothing to do with any creation doctrine… Rather my faith in Christ is all to do with the historical happenance of Christ’s death and resurrection.

I would challenge Ken Ham to show through the New Testament how it makes a particular belief of one form of creation to be essential to the Christian Faith….

  4. I give it two days before Ham mentions you on his website! It’ll improve your traffic! ๐Ÿ™‚

    Well said Daniel, well said.

  5. I have little time for this sort of nonsense. If you want to believe in 24 hour, 6 literal day creation as a result of your Scriptural interpretation, then that’s fine (I personally hold differing views). Fortunately the position papers are not binding on A/G clergy unless they are passed by the entire General Council. (To date, only the paper entitled “Divorce and Remarriage” has been so legislated).

The fact that we can’t have charity about an issue which is in the Tradition of the Church clearly (to use the Lutheran term) adiaphora is striking and sad. What people don’t realize is that the Assemblies has ceased to grow in the majority (Caucasian) congregations, and it seems to me that doctrinal rigidity on non-essentials is a great way to ensure that continues. So much for Christ the Savior, Healer, Baptizer in the Holy Ghost, and Soon-Coming King. We’re too busy getting sucked into debates by fundamentalists who want to fight about the age of the earth that we’ve stopped reading the gospels, stopped teaching about baptism in the Holy Spirit in a way which is winsome and attractive, and generally punted on our Pentecostal identities. Maybe the HS has punted on us.

    1. Well said, Dave.

Mark, I’m all about the numbers. ๐Ÿ˜‰

  6. such a shame the AG leadership will give into these sheeple….
