Karl Barth’s Church Dogmatics is on it’s way! I can’t even believe it! Something I have wanted to study for years, now affordable. WOW!

  1. Dan, I am keen to see some pics of this reprinted edition. Would you be able to post some at all? I am interested in the covers, binding and layout. ๐Ÿ™‚

    Cheers!

  2. That’s a good idea. I’ll try to do that when they get here.

    1. You can get some idea at Amazon and at their “look inside” facility to e.g.paperback Volume 1 (copy and paste link: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Church-Dogmatics-Study-Doctrine-Word/dp/0567202909/ref=sr_1_4?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1288336607&sr=1-4#reader_0567202909 sorry I’ve done .co.uk but sure same will be available at Amazon.com)
Are you intending to plough through all 14 volumes in order or can you recommend any particular ones to start off with? This is a new one for me – I’m tempted to start reading it.

      cheers Eleanor

      1. Elenor the edition you have linked to are the revised English edition. It has a completely new typeface, layout and format. The set Dan has purchased are a reprinting of the old volumes. (this is the set here http://www.amazon.co.uk/Church-Dogmatics-Karl-Barth/dp/1598564420/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1288338002&sr=1-1)

Starting at Volume 1 is obvious but I have always been told volume 4 is the best (and easiest) place to start.

  3. Oh yes Mark I see now – many thanks for that
    cheers Eleanor

  4. Dan,

Got my set delivered Monday before I came down to Atlanta for AAR. Not sure when you’re thinking you might have time to study them ๐Ÿ™‚ but if you wanted to try to read some together and perhaps discuss (?) I’d love to do that with you. I figure I’m going to have to have a support group to really get much study done :). Let me know if that’s something you’d be interested in. I’ve got some ideas on how to start tackling the beast (namely, by starting at the very end and working backwards).

    1. I have no idea when to tackle it! LOL

One idea online is to work through a volume every six months. One blogger (a prof at Fuller) says he’ll start in January with 1.1. We can join his weekly comments or go through it and blog on our own. At 2 volumes a year it is a seven year project.

Maybe some other guys in the Cities would join us for your idea? I’d love to listen in. I am sure I’d have very little to contribute, but I’d enjoy the ride! LOL

  5. I would like to hope that I’d be able to tackle it somewhat faster than 7 years, but who knows. Either way, I do know that I want to start with IV/4 and follow with IV/3, IV/2 and IV/1 in that order. After that, we’ll see. A comment at AAR this weekend from some Barth guys said that Barth studies would be completely different if people read Barth backwards, and so I think I’m going to see about that.

I wish there were a few more systematicians around who had time to read ๐Ÿ™‚

    1. I was wondering why you suggested going backwards. That could be interesting. If there might be some other guys interested, I could be in. My only deal is time. Daytime (late afternoon) might be best. With my schedule I try to guard my evenings.
