Bold Movement by Lutherans

With the ELCA decision to ordain homosexual clergy, which was only the latest thing in a long line of worries about the denomination, a new Lutheran group emerged. At their conference, the speakers were incredibly BOLD. Carl Braaten in particular, went after the ELCA for being gnostic.

Braaten described the ELCA approach to authority as deficient in three “Gnostic” ways, deficiencies that played a big role in the passage of last summer’s ELCA social statement on sexuality.

Deficiency 1: Like the ancient Gnostics, the ELCA is antinomian—it rejects the law of God.

Deficiency 2: Like the ancient Gnostics, the ELCA claims a higher knowledge—higher than anything available from an external Word of God. Gnostics trusted instead in enlightenment from within, which is where they locate God. So do those guiding ELCA’s decisions, said Braaten.

Deficiency 3: Like the ancient Gnostics, ELCA leaders sneer at the idea that we can look to a book as our authority—especially a book written by Jews. Antinomianism and anti-Semitism are always found together, said Braaten.

What a bold declaration.

  1. that is a good thing. tell it like it is. Even if it is denied, the writing is on the wall. for sure.

  2. Interesting post. That kind of boldness is to be applauded. Shades of gnosticism are not limited to the ELCA. I see them show up in different forms all over Evangelical theology as well. It seems it’s a very resilient and attractive lie.

  3. Good reflection Dan.
I am am against the church standing against homosexuals marrying on a societal basis because the church is but a subset of society…..

However its a totally different issue regarding Gods ways within the church….I have / am involved with a ministry that helps people struggling in areas of their sexuality…and have no qualms about ordaining someone who struggles in this area of personal life as long as they were celibate…. the same requirements that we have for a single heterosexual person.

I like how you have linked it to gnosticism… interesting that one.. how often as Pentecostal s do we do things because we feel led in this same way….I cringe when I hear things said in the church that have no witness with the word of God.

  4. Craig,

I didn’t make the comparison, it was a quote from the conference.
