Why I am Sacramental

Really, I’m probably not. I tossed between “Orthodox,” “Liturgical,” “Mainline,” or something else. What I appreciate so deeply in my life is the addition of the meaning of the Lord’s Table. I have a deeper love for liturgy. Public prayers. Reading of Scripture.

I have a deeper appreciation for the love of the Church. I believe in the Body of Christ. The Church is not a building. It is the Body of Christ. I cannot lightly dismiss the Church, as other seem so ready to do. (EX: Saying, “Church is a box. My God does not dwell in a box.” Silly.) Christ is the head of his Church. I am part of that. I love others in the Body of Christ. I love public worship. Together. Not over the internet or by Twitter. The Body…together…loving Christ.

I am not fully Sacramental, and I realize that. Yet, it is part of my life and I deeply love it.

  1. I would say pastor Dan, that Pentecostals are supremely sacramental…about almost everything besides the Sacraments! I still recall watching TBN and having “annointed” water/handkerchiefs/oil/etc… pawned off on the viewing public. Apparently Pentecostals could pray for any object but Bread and grape juice and expect it to carry the power of the Holy Spirit.

Keep fleshing out a Pentecostal sacramentology, I think the resources are there in the tradition.

  2. I would not even begin to equate my working definition of Pentecostal with TBN and the stuff they peddle.

  3. O Lord no! It wasn’t my intention whatsoever to imply such. I just didn’t have any particular stories other than that off the top of my head. My main point being that as opposed to the cessationists of the Protestant world (even if not in theology, in practice), Pentecostals are passionate about the reality of the world being charged with God’s Spirit.

They annoint with oil, they lay on hands, etc… All what seems to me a proper and fruitful groundwork for the fleshing out of a Pentecostal sacramentology. Indeed, in my reading, Eastern Orthodox theology is for all intents and purposes, incredibly similar to Pentecostal theology when it comes to issues like this. I hope actually to work some of this out myself in time.
