The no flash, no glitz world we can’t stand
It’s serving. It is the discipline of service. We want to serve… as long as we get our selfie in and posted somewhere in the social media world. Richard Foster gives me this harsh reminder: There is no flash, no glitz, no titanic anything. Today’s celebrity culture, captive to its pretentious egoism, simply finds such realities hard to grasp.

That which we do not know
One thing I admire about C.S. Lewis is his full candor when dealing with skeptics. He won’t tolerate “bumper sticker” answers from anyone, but especially those who do not believe and ridicules those who do. In his chapter on heaven in Mere Christianity, he wrote this: There is no need to be worried by facetious people who try to make the Christian hope of…

How we view government
A column by David Brooks had a great quote on how partisans often view our government from the inside: Right now there is bipartisan inconsistency over the effectiveness of government. Republicans think government is a bumbling tool at home but a magnificent instrument abroad. Democrats think government is a magnificent instrument at home but a bumbling tool abroad. In reality,…

Christianity isn’t for the lazy
“If you are thinking of becoming a Christian, I warn you, you are embarking on something which is going to take the whole of you, brains and all… Anyone who is honestly trying to be a Christian will soon find his intelligence being sharpened: one of the reasons why it needs no special education to be a Christian is that…

Things that don’t go together
In the “what’s wrong with this picture” category: A saying on a post said: “Worship isn’t about hyping up. It’s about bowing down.” Great saying. And it was posted over a picture of a scene from a very hyped up worship service… or at least the kind of picture that churches most of the time would want you to THINK…

Free me from the tyranny of STUFF
I am in a reading group with Renovare online and we are currently working our way through a book on spiritual disciplines by Nathan Foster, son of Richard Foster. Nathan is much more raw in his struggle with spiritual discipline. What Richard Foster wrote on always sounded like a glide into tranquility. I knew it wasn’t, but it just sounded…

The Lobster Story
This weekend we had our annual Leadership Training at the church. It was an incredibly significant time because we are in the midst of huge transitions. Our church property is for sale, we’re looking at a new property, adding a business… and so much more. It is a call for transformational thinking. I centered my teaching around a great book called, The…
