My last post reflected on Daniel 2 and the expectation he had that God would speak. The expectation Daniel carried keeps me in thought and prayer. This isn’t something meant for a just a “chosen few.” As believers, we can live in the power of expectation.
Daniel also walked in confidence because the vision Nebuchadnezzar had, which Daniel interpreted, showed the permanence of the Kingdom of God and the temporal status of every other kingdom in history.
“In the time of those kings, the God of heaven will set up a kingdom that will never be destroyed, nor will it be left to another people. It will crush all those kingdoms and bring them to an end, but it will itself endure forever.” (Daniel 2:44, NIV)
In our current world where everything is instant and our actions are instant and we have left no room for margin or thought… as believers we need the confidence of Daniel. YES, there is a lot going on. YES, there are massive abuses. YES, we should speak out and act as we can.
And YES… we walk with confidence and understanding that it is God at work, not us. We are partners with him. And while war rages and evil people run ruthlessly over powerless people, there is a demise they will face. It may not be on our time schedule, but their demise is certain.
The vocation of the believer is to join God in his reclamation project and keep working to see his Kingdom come and his will be done on earth as in heaven. We don’t have to burn anything down. If there is a burning to happen, that is up to the Lord. We have a vocation in repairing and reclamation.
Daniel was steady in his life, even being ripped out of his home country and forced to absorb a whole new culture, because he knew the Kingdom of God, that rock in the vision, would outlast even Babylon. Daniel is the example we all need as believers in this day. We need to quit “mourning” over the loss of Christendom and trying to foolishly get it back. We not only look bad doing it, but it’s a fool’s errand. We need to understand the shifts that have happened, keep our vision clear, and work steadily to bring the goodness of the Kingdom to all that is around us.
We need expectation that God will speak. We need confidence that God is indeed building his Kingdom and it has nothing to do with American democracy, any particular political party, or burning it all down. We walk with the understanding that we are helping in God’s great reclamation project and the timetable is not ours, it is his.
