Christ the King Sunday

The liturgical year is almost over for those who worship in many churches such as the Anglican Church or Roman Catholic Church. The end of that year is Christ the King Sunday in the Anglican Church.

The following Sunday will be the First Sunday of Advent, which begins a new year for the Church. It’s a fresh reminder that, as believers, we are not fully “home” yet. Our calendar is different. Our worship is different. Our allegiances are different.

Christ the King Sunday is a reminder as well. We have no other allegiances. There is no citizenship greater than being in the Kingdom of God.

Our Lord, Jesus Christ, rules and reigns and he is on a reclamation project in this world. We, his saints, are part of that project. It is a Sunday to be reminded that it is HIS agenda that matters, not ours. It is how HE wants to run things, not how WE would like to run things.

All our political and economic debates are not enough. Creation has been fractured and damaged. He is on the road to repairing it all. We are called to join him. This can be done in a Communist country, a democratic republic, or in a dictatorship. His Kingdom can be on the move in the poorest and richest of countries.

As believers, we are reminded our Lord is Jesus Christ. It is about the Kingdom of God. It is not about the United States or democracy or capitalism. It is Christ alone.

I need these fresh reminders in times like we face.

Almighty and everlasting God, whose will it is to restore all things in your well-beloved Son, the King of kings and Lord of lords: Mercifully grant that the peoples of the earth, divided and enslaved by sin, may be freed and brought together under his most gracious rule; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.(Book of Common Prayer)
