Reading with pen in hand

I ran across an article about Richard Nixon’s method of reading books with a pen so he could write in the margins. (HERE)

There was this quote from John Adams:

John Adams, another busy producer of marginalia, liked to quote a Latin epigram: Studium sine calamo somnium. Adams translated this as: “Study without a pen in your hand is but a dream.”

I have to have a pen with me as well. My Bibles get marked quickly. Most books I read (non-fiction anyway) will have markings. If they don’t, I’m not getting much out of the book. Writing in the margins and marking up the text are how I stay engaged.

Any other readers who keep their pen at the ready out there?
