In a time when character has not even been the conversation when it comes to politics and solving big issues, Mitt Romney has put it on full display as a senator and leader. He leaves the Senate after one term and is talking honestly about what we’ve known all along: the GOP has become the POT (Part of Trump) and character simply does not matter to any of them any longer.
David Brooks gives a lasting tribute to Romney HERE. From the article:
(Senate Majority Leader Mitch) McConnell’s core problem is that you can’t negotiate with narcissism. Every time you make a concession to Trump’s selfishness, it voraciously seeks to devour another pound of your flesh.
Here is where we are: We have gone beyond the bounds of normal democratic governance.
The party that harped on “character” in the Clinton years is vacant.
Over the Trump years, we’ve learned how easy it is to anesthetize one’s moral circuits. John McCain kept his moral compass, and so did Romney, but they are the exceptions. Many others joined the general fakery. You start by lying about yourself, and pretty soon you’re lying to yourself.
With the retirement of Romney comes the end of character. What will be left on Capitol Hill in a party once led by Abraham Lincoln and Teddy Roosevelt will be a toxic waste dump willing to do all they can to stay in charge of the toxic waste dump, including making sure an insurrectionist is returned to office.
Character matters. We make jokes about corrupt politicians and all that, but there really were people of character that existed in those structures. Romney may be the last of those good ones in a once proud party.
