Maundy Thursday

We enter into the holiest of days. Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, Holy Saturday. The power of the Gospel is here. We are being led through the hardest part of all that Jesus has done to understand the power we have in the resurrection.

I didn’t understand Maundy Thursday at all, even when I was beginning to learn the importance of Good Friday. Now, this day has deeper meaning for me of all days leading us to resurrection. (A guide to the Anglican practice of this day is here.)

This is the time when the Lord’s Supper is instituted. It is incredibly powerful. I think of this quote from NT Wright:

“When Jesus wanted fully to explain what his forthcoming death was all about, he didn’t give them a theory. He didn’t even give them a set of scriptural texts. He gave them a meal.”

But the part of the service that is most impactful for me currently is the stripping of the altar. I am left undone.

The pictures given us this day are stark. Powerful. Meaningful.
