The great temptation to avoid the work of the Cross

Matthew 4:8-9

Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendor. “All this I will give you,” he said, “if you will bow down and worship me.”

On the third temptation of Christ, I made this note a few years ago:

The temptation is to skip the work of the cross altogether and bring a show of power. Build your empire NOW. The enemy tempts us with immediate answers. The enemy tempts us with the luxury of power, ruling, authority. We are tempted with EMPIRE in our day… and the evangelical chruch is failing badly. We are tempted with political action… and we are succumbing. Dear Lord… we need deliverance! Let us not listen to the voice of the enemy any longer for instant power!
