Romans 12:19–20 (CSB)
19 Friends, do not avenge yourselves; instead, leave room for God’s wrath, because it is written, Vengeance belongs to me; I will repay,, says the Lord. 20 But
If your enemy is hungry, feed him.
If he is thirsty, give him something to drink.
For in so doing
you will be heaping fiery coals on his head.,
This year I got a copy of the Tony Evans Study Bible because I have great respect for his decades of ministry. Reading the notes in the Bible is reading a treasure of lifelong study of the Scriptures. Plus, they have a pastoral practicality to them.
He writes this note for these verses: It could be that one of the reasons God hasn’t dealt with your enemy yet is that you are still in the way!
We are called to live at peace with everyone (v. 18). Our call isn’t to exact revenge. Our enemies may not feel “called” to be at peace with us. That isn’t our “call.” Our call is to make sure we live with transformed minds (Rom. 12:1-2) so we are ready to deal with situations outside the norm.
When we get out of the way, God deals with the situation. I find I like inserting myself and my desires into the situation… and interpret that as GOD’S will!
