The call to be “FULLY IN” with Christ

John 6 has become one of my “slow” chapters. I can’t just read through it on a reading plan anymore. I grasp at the air sometimes trying to understand.

A couple of key verses:

Jesus said to them, “Very truly I tell you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day. For my flesh is real food and my blood is real drink. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me, and I in them. (John 6:53-56)

Some notes I jotted down a few years ago:

To “believe” is found here. It is not our Western view of mental ascent. It is not to “know” something with our head knowledge. To “believe” is to be FULLY IN. Jesus calls us to be FULLY IN. It is the fullest participation his divine nature. It is to have ALL of him, even when it sounds like cannibalism. It is to ABSORB HIM.

Jesus doesn’t want my mental ascent. He wants my full participation in HIM. I have to be ALL in… to “eat his flesh” and “drink his blood.”

I hesitate to use the term “ALL IN” because it’s a poker term and the picture is shoving your chips to the middle of the table in a huge gamble. That’s not it. It is shoving ME to the middle of the table in a huge gamble.

I am called to fully absorb Christ. I am with him FULLY when I am taking HIM in fully.
