Too Busy for God

We are reading through the Book of Joshua this week as we being our summer journey through the Old Testament historical books in our church.

Joshua 9 is the story of the Gibeonite deception. A group of Gibeonites came and negotiated peace with Israel because they knew Israel would run them over. Their only hope of survival was to fake being from a distant land and hope Israel fell for it.

They did.

The key was Israel “did not inquire of the Lord” on this one (Josh. 9:14).

Israel was too busy running over Canaan to stop and ask God about one small negotiation. Who has time when you’re out conquering new lands?

It’s the busyness that will trip up our walk with God. Too busy to pray. Too busy to stop and listen. Too busy working for God to listen to God.

Every day has the possibility of opportunity. Too often we are shoved through the day and end of breathless on the other side. Too often we drop at the end of the day wondering what happened.

Today. Don’t let today be that day.

One response to “Too Busy for God”

  1. That stuck out to me as well. Not a mention in that story of an inquiry.

The previous story of the conquering of Jericho and Ai is another reminder to me about listening to the voice of the Lord. In one story the people conquered a land and the Lord told them to destroy everything, to keep nothing. One family disobeyed. The very next story, the Lord tells them that they can keep for themselves after conquering.

The lesson is obedience over model. God may direct us in one way one time and then another way another time. We will only know his will if we ask. If Achan would have waited on God, and trusted Him…the next battle He had good things for Him.
