Started into Timothy yesterday and had a question:
1) What does Paul mean when he says he is handing someone over to Satan? Is he just saying that he is no longer investing in them but leaving them to do what they will?-
Paul acknowledges what has already taken place in this person’s life. His purpose is restorative. Let someone truly sense what it is to be out from under protection, and when they come to their senses, bring them home quickly!

Continuing to read Timothy.
Timothy 5 talks about caring for widows and those in need. He refers to a “list.” I am guessing that just refers to a list of those the church was helping. Is this accurate? Paul puts the burden for caring for others on families. 5:8 “…if someone doesn’t provide for their own family…they have denied the faith.” Burden for caring for our vulnerable populations have gone from church to gov’t. Not only do individuals in need have a sense of entitlement, but I have noticed at the hospital, their family members also seek out that entitlement. Abuse, misuse, and exploitation of help is nothing new. In fact, it must have become a growing problem for Paul to mention it to Timothy.
Timothy 5:20, “Discipline those who are sinning in front of everyone so that all the others will be afraid.” Help me understand this one:). Maybe not much to understand, but instead is just another one of those hard teachings that I don’t want to recognize.

Discipline is not something we do well, or even like Paul says. We are too timid… and in a litigious society who wants another lawsuit? But with Paul, if an elder, a leader, sins, they need to be publicly rebuked. Leadership has a high cost.
