Oh Just Shoot Me Now!

I have discovered why my denomination has such a fixation on ministers under the age of 40 right now. This article’s opening paragraphs reveal all:

IN 1905, at age 55, Sir William Osler, the most influential physician of his era, decided to retire from the medical faculty of Johns Hopkins. In a farewell speech, Osler talked about the link between age and accomplishment: The “effective, moving, vitalizing work of the world is done between the ages of 25 and 40 — these 15 golden years of plenty.”

In comparison, he noted, “men above 40 years of age” are useless. As for those over 60, there would be an “incalculable benefit” in “commercial, political and professional life, if, as a matter of course, men stopped work at this age.”

  1. Because we are supposedly “under-represented” at various leadership levels across the board. It makes me think of affirmative action at its finest. 😉

  2. Which is why they are ALSO pressing for more women in senior ministry positions as well. 😉

  3. Maybe, just maybe, a deeper look at why after 40 ‘accomplishment’ changes.

Maybe, people get wiser, and work out it is all a load of rubbish… Maybe, people find contentment in their lives and realize striving is useless. Maybe they realise that at 40, they have worked themselves to death to the detriment of their friends, family and even themselves.

What about wisdom? I don’t have a lot yet, and yet I am almost 40. I’m hoping for more after that point.

What about experience? I’ve got lots, but could always use more.

Oh well. I guess I will continue to enjoy my ‘golden years’, or what little is left of them….

    1. Enjoy them while you can! LOL

Actually, the article is much better than the first two paragraphs. I was having some fun with those first two paragraphs in light of how my denomination is currently behaving.

  4. It is also trendy, and we are easily given to trends in the AG right now.
