The call of God doesn’t often come in the news. Direction from God may not come in the “action” of the day, or the “action” of our lives.
I love Elijah’s call in 1 Kings 19. God needed to give him new direction. When Elijah was at Horeb, there was the wind that came through, then the earthquake, but both times it was noted, “God was not in those.” Then… the gentle whisper.
If I could use a little latitude, I think of this, “There came a tremendously exuberant worship service. The noise was great. The worship was fun. Yet, no voice of God. Then, there came the earth-shattering news, the noise of the day. The 24 hour news cycle blared away, declaring wars and rumors of wars. And the voice of God was not in that earth shattering news. Then, ever so briefly, there was silence. No ipods blaring music. Not email or Facebook clamoring for our attention. An oh so brief moment where silence finally got to reign. And the voice of God gently whispered.”
I confess I too often think I am hearing the voice of God in the noise of my life. Yet, when I still my soul, I find his voice there almost every time.
