Daring to Hope: Where Would You Give?

I am working through the passage in Isa. 2:1-5 for Sunday. I don’t expect much in the way of response on Thanksgiving weekend, but I have this thought:

If we would dare, as believers, to really step up and HOPE, how would we do it?

For instance, in keeping with the Christmas season, could we give away money to something to honor another person? Sometimes we have people in our lives who literally have everything. I could give in their honor to a missions project (for example).  I posted before about beating our defense dollars into something creative. So, what would that look like for you in the next year?

As an example, one temptation for me is buying multiple copies of Bible translations. Next year I want my goal to be ONE Bible (the NIV2011) and then give away money to Bible translators who are working on putting the Bible into languages who need the ONE translation of the Word of God.

Where would you give? World Vision? American Bible Society? Kiva? What are your thoughts?

Thanks,

The Apprentice.

  1. Instead of all that, give to a missionary – either a wycliff missionary or someone doing something similar to world vision but on a different track.

  2. That’s a GREAT one as well, Brian. Thanks!

  3. I wonder if you could give someone your time?

In a world that is mostly consumed with the concept of money; I think it is boring to give money…unless you know that person is really in need of it. By this I mean it is easy to give money…but is that really a personal cost or a cheap way out?

    1. Great thought. I’ve wondered how we can expand in our ability to create. One of my favorite movies is “The Blind Side.” It’s also one of my favorite true stories. A family takes in a homeless kid and help him find his way in life. They didn’t have to. They risked. There is no way of knowing what they saw in that kid, but they took a chance. It saved his life.

What can we give of ourselves to make that difference? Just one person. Just one kid…

  4. When I was in Melbourne (interstate) for my honeymoon in June, I passed what appeared to be a homeless woman begging for money. Twice I walked past her on two separate occasions and had no cash to give her.

I felt stirred up about her and was asking God; “Father…what would you have me do?” I felt God quietly speak into my heart about giving her my time and sitting with her to hear her story.

The next day I set out to find her and do just that; though I never did see her again. Since that experience I have always been ready to sit with a beggar on the street to hear their story.

    1. I had that happen with a Bible the Lord told me to give away. I didn’t do it at first. Then, when I decided to obey, the gal was gone. I have not been too slow since then.
