God is Not a Republican

Or a Democrat. No matter how hard we try to SAY that… we just stumble over it. We let our political views sneak through as believers.

Listening to someone who wanted to pray for people in a legislative setting, the assessment of how “bad” the situation is during the session was based on tax increases. Politically, we can like or dislike tax increases. As spiritual counselors, that is just a tad further down the list. I can’t assess a spiritual situation just by a committee wanting to pass a tax increase.

We can debate the merits of tax increases or tax cuts, but don’t act like it is some spiritual or moral exercise.

  1. I couldn’t agree more, Daniel. I’m so glad you changed my perspective on church and state in Church History this semester. It has given me the reason why I always knew I was slightly irritated with conservative Christian politicians, even though I consider myself conservative.

  2. Good point here, Pastor Dan. I cannot label myself to any political bent. and I too get irritated with the “right” sometimes more than the ‘left’ if i am to use those labels they embrace. raising taxes or cutting taxes really has nothing to do with furthing the kingdom here, you think?
