Privacy — A Little Late for the Concern

Issues over Facebook’s use of information, stolen laptops that have credit card info, stolen bank numbers that lead to fake debit cards…

We wrestle with these issues of having too much information out there. The horses are out of the barn on this one, though.

This article discusses the under-30 generation and their penchant for TMI — Too Much Information. It’s not a problem of trying to hold back information. It’s a problem of putting too much information out there, and then realizing it can be damaging.

I continually waver back and forth about how much to put “out there.” I even wrestle with the simple thought of using a computer at all. Unfortunately, I lost that battle long ago. I love using the computer. Even nostalgia can’t get me back to a manual typewriter. I make dozens of mistakes on a blog post, or writing a sermon. A computer helps me get those corrected before I print one page or post a thought. (I don’t always catch them, but it would certainly be far worse without the aid of the computer.)

The horses are out of the barn. The information is out there. But for the under-30 generation, there is a fresh lesson in restraint to be learned. Facebook allows for the spewing of all kinds of emotion. It’s tempting. Learning to hold back and use the tools properly is a good lesson. We’re not learning it very well, but it’s still the opportunity to learn.

  1. Read that article – It’s almost like you need professional and personal pages, blogs, sites – with the personal ones by invitation only. The problem is, how we meet people and what group they’d fit into. The line is blurry.

    1. The line is definitely blurry and we’ll probably never have complete privacy. (Not that we ever did.) What we need is better discretion in our lives.
