The Need for Pastor-Scholars

One of my goals is to truly be a “pastor-scholar.” I certainly don’t think of myself in the vein of John Piper, yet I have as a goal the ability to strive to know God and then communicate him to my church. I don’t want to be a slouch intellectually or spiritually. Yet, I don’t want people in my church feel like they need a Master’s degree or something.

In the vein of the early church fathers, or perhaps Jonathan Edwards, I desire to pursue God with my mind AND my spirit.

  1. I know I really appreciate it when my pastor take us on a deep dive someplace in the Word. Looking at culture, tradition, the true meaning of different words-it’s all good, meaty stuff. And you as a pastor have to “know” what you are talking about to a: take us there and b: take us there in a way/form we can “get”. We want to go deeper. We need a dive master to take us there.

  2. Bravo! You are that Dan. I love listening to your perspective about church history and the desert fathers. You have a wonderful heart and mind.

  3. I do like a pastor/scholar sort of teaching alot. One of the first times i was exposed to this was at the Church of the Open Door through Rev. David Johnson. I was very blessed on the way he taught, giving me the background of the scriptures.. who they were addressing, culture at the time, beliefs at the time, the greek and the hebrew meanings of words, and of course how the scripture relates to us in present day. It stuck with me more, and made sense more to me. I liked it when David would divide things that were either a timeless truth or something that was for that culture at the time. That helped me not get into legalizm, and helped me also not to go way off into too much liberty. I believe you are also that sort of pastor/scholar Dan. And i am forever blessed too.
