Hurricane Katrina has revealed our national soul even more, I think.

When 9/11 hit, the nation pulled together for a time. It took us quite awhile before we started hurling blame around. This time, anarchy reigns, we can’t get help fast enough to our own citizens, and blame was hurled almost as soon as Katrina had left the Gulf Coast.

We are a bitter nation.

9/11 split us open and revealed a bankrupt heart. We have done nothing, essentially, to remedy that condition. Katrina has only opened that emptiness wider, and we are found sorely wanting.

Our national soul is barren, I believe.

  1. You are so right, Dan. Our soul is barren. We have become so self absorbed that we cannot fathom or deal with a catastrophe of this magnitude.
The aftermath of Katrina is truly tragic. Still, how many times have we heard the comments such as “this can only happen in some far off country”? We seem to expect that nothing like this could ever happen here and become bitter when it does.
This is sad, but there is hope when we see some people who are pulling together to help.
