Upon Further Review — NIV 2011
There are a couple of places to check out very thorough reviews of the NIV 2011. Dan Wallace has a four part review. Rodney Decker has a lengthy paper reviewing the NIV as well. They are much kinder, and much more thorough, regarding the NIV than, say, the Southern Baptists. 😉

Reviews on the NIV 2011
This review will apparently be a four-parter. He begins with discussing more issues about the RSV, which will lead into discussion on the NIV 2011. It’s interesting reading thus far.

The Common English Bible and “Human One”
I have the Common English Bible with Apocrypha on my Nook and use it for reading when I don’t have my NIV with me. It’s a good way for me to test the readability of the text. I am also slipping the CEB from time to time in our public readings at our worship services. The renderings are refreshing and…

The CBT Responds to the Southern Baptists
The Committee on Bible Translation responded a few weeks back to the Southern Baptist resolution “banning” the use of the NIV: A brief response from the Committee on Bible Translation to the resolution introduced on the floor of the Southern Baptist Convention regarding the updated New International Version June 15, 2011 The Committee on Bible Translation (CBT) welcomes informed criticism…

NIV 2011 Banned by Southern Baptists?
This resolution came forward at their current meeting: 5:14 p.m. — In a surprising and dramatic move moments ago, messengers voted first to consider a resolution highly critical of the TNIV 2011 and then passed the resolution nearly unanimously. The resolution came from the floor — introduced by messenger Tim Overton — and not from the Resolutions Committee. Overturn’s appeal…

More Small Observations on the NIV 2011
Yet another nice little improvement in the NIV 2011. In John 14 where Jesus uses the word paraclete for the Holy Spirit, the old NIV used “Counselor.” It is now “Advocate.” Also in 1 John 2:1 the update cleaned up the translation so it simply reads “Advocate” again to describe the work of Jesus. It’s nice to see these little spots…

I LIKE — The Bible Translation Game
In the spirit of wanting to find the good in things, and not just the negatives, I continue on with my “I LIKE” campaign. For the initial rules of my little game, read here. Please understand, this is not to say I am 100 percent in favor of something. When I use opposites, I actually PREFER one thing over the…

Quick Thought on the NIV 2011
One of the things I enjoy about translations these days is the opportunity to find out about some of the translators. The more I find out about the translators of the NIV, the more impressed I am with their heart for God and the care with which they do translation work. I heard Gordon Fee several years ago speak on…

Translations and Readability
As a pastor I want a translation to make sense to my congregation, yet I just don’t like it to be too “informal.” Here is yet another reason why I am preferring the NIV 2011 (Old TNIV). Which makes more sense? 7 Deep calls to deep in the roar of your waterfalls; all your waves and breakers have swept over…
