The Intentionality of Discipleship
Dallas Willard in The Divine Conspiracy puts it this way: Our focus as the Church needs to be on intentionally making disciples. Instead, we focus intentionally on making converts. Our goal, as the Church, should be to intentionally make disciples and let converts “happen.” Right now our focus is on making converts and hoping disciples “happen.” That’s quite a difference.

We Do Not Drift Into Discipleship
Following Christ is to be intentional. It is not something we accidentally find. Dallas Willard breaks it down in The Divine Conspiracy. 1. We ASK. The nature of the Kingdom is to ASK. We ASK to be his disciple. We consider the costs. That includes the costs of following Jesus, and the costs for NOT following Jesus. But when we…

The Common English Bible and the Age of Internet Reaction
This is amazing. I sent a note to the CEB folks about the dislike over the use of “it” referring to the Spirit in Romans 8:26. (It was our reading for Sunday morning.) I got an initial response quickly (maybe 30 minutes) telling me the history of the translation decision on that verse. Also, they noted I was the second…

The Spirit of “It”
I made a quick note yesterday that I can’t endorse the Common English Bible because of the use of “it” in reference to the Spirit in Romans 8. I checked the e-reader version and the online version. Both read that way. When the CEB states in their purpose that they will keep the pronouns of the Godhead as “he,” this…

Why It Will NOT be the CEB for Me
I thought I had problems with the Common English Bible using “Human One” for Son of Man. Today in our public reading I used the CEB to read from Romans 8. They call the Spirit “it.” I was floored. IT? REALLY?

Being a Disciple
Dallas Willard walks us through the meaning of “disciple” in The Divine Conspiracy. The call is to BE with Jesus. It’s not about perfection. It’s about learning as a beginner from the Master. The disciple is one who lives in the kingdom of God, applying that kingdom for the good of others, and even makes it possible for them to…

Being Spirit-filled Apprentices
There is no way of getting around the fact that if you are going to be someone’s apprentice you have to BE with them. I am with Jesus to learn how to be LIKE Jesus. Jesus gave the promise of the Advocate. The Spirit would be the One with us to remind us of Jesus. When we follow Jesus, we…

The Narrow Gate Does NOT Mean Being “Narrow”
There are just certain things I can count on in the blogging world from the blogs I read regularly. I have ones I follow that will look for the negative in some particular source, then just bash away when they find it. Sometimes, it’s worth looking into. Such is the case with Joel Watts, whose disgust with Fox News is…
