  • Week 11 — The Affections of Christ in the Familiar

I am on a particular journey in my study/meditation of Scriptures over a three year period. Beginning last Church Year, I make my habit to study the readings for the next Sunday. They are also my meditation. It has been a wonderful journey and I have generally stayed on track.

  • Week 10: The Affections of Christ and the Power of Resurrection

One of the New Testament offerings for Easter Sunday was Colossians 3:1-4 . It sets my heart on meditation every time. This is a rich passage that cannot stop at v. 4 for me.

  • Week 9: The Affections of Christ — Mature thinking

I have held for quite some time that following Christ brings with it a lot of questions. We live in world bent on “dualism.” I was reminded listening to a conversation with Richard Rohr that this is simply not enough for mature followers of Christ.

  • Week 8: The Affections of Christ — Knowing Him

There are times when the Spirit causes me to “camp” on a passage of Scripture. I can’t go on. I read it… reread it… study some cross references… look up some words… eventually think, “Well, that was nice” and try to move on. And the Spirit says, “Look again.”

  • The passionate pursuit

There is a great article by David Brooks on becoming people with passionate pursuit in our lives once again. In it, I was caught by his definition of “leisure.”

  • Week 7: The Affections of Christ and Holy Pursuit

It is a magnificent piece of writing. When I read Paul in these moments I glimpse his hunger and desire to know Christ. There have been times when I come on these passages and I almost weep thinking, “Paul! I want to see what you’ve seen!” Read Philippians 3:7-16 and HERE I use the Common English Bible.

  • Week 6: The Affections of Christ… and the distraction of the internet

Comment Magazine is quickly becoming a favorite of mine. They work in collaboration with a podcast called “Conversing with Mark Labberton” and Anne Snyder, editor of Comment, was on the podcast going over their manifesto for humanity. It is worth a listen. HERE

  • Week Five: The Affections of Christ… ONE THING

One thing I ask from the Lord,    this only do I seek:that I may dwell in the house of the Lord    all the days of my life,to gaze on the beauty of the Lord    and to seek him in his temple. (Ps. 27:4, NIV)

  • Week Four: The affection of Christ and experience

Exodus 33-34 is a place of wonder for me. I am sounding old… and I realize it’s because I AM… but I begin sentences with: “Back in the day…” I catch myself and then realize, well, yes, they were “back in the day.”

  • Week Three: The Affections of Christ and the Rhythm of the Church Calendar

A reason, among many, I have come into the Anglican Church is the church calendar. It reminds me that the Kingdom “calendar” is not our civic calendar. Churches won’t be commemorating civic holidays in a church service. (Memorial Day, Independence Day, Veterans Day, etc.) It is a reminder that we are not on the same page as the world… and…
