This quote from Thomas Merton is incredibly wise… and hard.
Do everything you can to avoid the noise and the business of men. Keep as far away as you can from the places where they gather to cheat and insult one another, to exploit one another, to laugh at one another, or to mock one another with their false gestures of friendship. (from New Seeds of Contemplation)
In other words, just stay off social media.
Merton has his battles in his time. (Mainly the radio.) Each generation has their battles. We have to walk in a way that keeps out the noise so we can more fully engage Christ. This is my hardest challenge, in all honesty. I know I will post this and then share it on my own social media. Then, the task is to simply share it and not doomscroll.
When I open my Bible, unless I am traveling, it is a physical Bible because if I use my tablet or computer, I have a nasty habit to break of opening my browser.
Engage the affections of Christ. This takes a re-ordering of sorts in my life. Where I sit. Where I engage Scripture. Where I journal. How I journal. All of it.
Social media brings disruption. The Spirit calls me to re-order my life so disruptions are minimized and my attention is more fully on the One whose attention is fully on me.
