Feast of Epiphany

Since 2021, this date carries two significant remembrances. One is eternal and beautiful. The other, a dark reminder of the dangers of nationalism over the Kingdom of God. For me, it is important to remember both. But celebrate one.

The Feast of Epiphany is the beautiful celebration as we leave Christmastide. It is a reminder that the nations were awakened to the coming of Messiah. The visit of the magi is commemorated on this day. A group of men traveling from the East who were Gentiles. The Kingdom of God is being manifested from the very beginning. This Messiah is not for Israel alone.

The Kingdom of God cannot be subjugated to misguided nationalism. It cannot be contained by one “race” or one nation. The Kingdom of God is the invitation for all to come. It is a feast for all.

O God, by the leading of a star you manifested your only Son to the peoples of the earth: Lead us, who know you now by faith, to your presence, where we may see your glory face to face; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen
