I am working my way through my notes from a few weeks ago when I went through Bonhoeffer’s Discipleship and the Book of Revelation. I am challenged by Bonhoeffer’s thoughts.
Some notes I took from his book:
When Jesus demanded the voluntary poverty of the rich young ruler there are only two choices: obey or disobey.
When Matthew is called to close up his tax booth and follow, he knew the call. He could accept or reject. The call was to leave everything to follow him.
Can we trust Jesus?
He is not asking me if I believe in his divinity or humanity. He is not asking me if I believe in his bodily resurrection. He calls out to me: follow me.
He will test my allegiances. He will test all of our allegiances. Will the young ruler who has wealth trust Jesus and be free of his possessions? Will someone fixed on finding their sexual identity lay that search down to find their identity in Christ? Will Matthew be free of his desire for the “known” security of wealth? Will someone fixed on political power lay it down to follow the way of Jesus because he invites them?
Do we trust Jesus?
He calls us to quit playing mental gymnastics with all our excuses and allegiances. Trust him. Follow.
