This article intrigued me. Of course, it threw me off initially, but I’m used to “church” a certain way.
Really… what are we used to when it comes to “church?” What I’m blown away with when I ready the New Testament is this: God isn’t bothered by small beginnings. Acts 19 is probably my favorite chapter in Acts. There was a regional movement started in Ephesus with 12 men.
Twelve.
Let’s learn this all over again.
The friend in the article new a woman who loved Jesus but wasn’t going back to church. The two friends thought of churches she might go to her near her home, but every one just had something that wasn’t going to “fit.”
The solution?
“I’m telling you,” he said, “She’s not going back to church.”
I looked up from my plate and asked, “Has she got a Bible?”
“I would think so.”
“Does she have a coffee pot?”
“Yes.”
“Then, I’m guessing she has 10 friends who, for whatever reason, aren’t going back to church. Tell her to call her friends, get together, study the Bible, take care of each other, find a way to do good in the community, and they’ll be fine.”
“That’s it?” he asked.
We have to find ways to re-engage with people around us. Get some folks together and commit to simply reading the gospels and seeing what Jesus was talking about and doing. Talk about it. Talk with each other. Do life in community.
Isn’t that “church?”
One size never fits all. And America isn’t “Christian.” It’s a mission field… and hear this: a mission field of white people.
We need to be open to some fresh approaches.
Grab a Bible. Grab a friend. Get some beverages. Talk.
