The tone deaf church

My reading today took me through Matthew 20:17-21. It is about disciples who just don’t “get” what discipleship is about.

Jesus has just finished talking about his suffering, death, and resurrection and here comes a mom asking about her boys. (As moms tend to do.)

Jesus is talking about giving up and this mom is talking about her boys “rising up.” It’s about greatness and position.

I wrote this as a margin note in this passage some time ago:

Tone deaf. We want what WE want and completely miss the purpose of the Kingdom in our lives! Jesus calls us to humility, and we turn right around and ask him for greatness.

We are witnessing a tone deaf church in our current climate and culture.

Lord, give us ears to hear YOU.
