My lifelong love of Scriptures

I was reflecting on some key moments in my own life when the study of Scripture had a tremendous impact on my life with a class yesterday. Then the thought hit me,  “EVERY significant shift in my life happened out of studying the Word.”

Shifts in ministry emphasis, where I did ministry, key decision points… prayer and the Scriptures were key.

In the last 26 years of ministry, I look back amazed at those key points and can relate certain Scriptures with those moments.

So much can happen in my life AFTER I begin with Scripture and prayer… but NOTHING significant can happen BEFORE I begin with Scripture and prayer.

  1. Dan, what do you do and how do you go about your study of the Word?

    1. It depends on the “season” of my life. I’ve gone through seasons where I’ve taken my time to carefully walk through a Book of the Bible. I will read through it several times, work through particular passages, word studies, etc., working on historical and literary context along the way.

There seasons where I dive into a topic, like “poverty” or “healing” and chase down those topics through the Scripture.

There are also seasons of “lectio divina” where it is taking a small portion and simply praying through and listening.

I’ve not been very “technical” in my approach. Gordon Fee’s book, “How to Read the Bible for All It’s Worth” is incredibly helpful. And I’ve also used the basic outlines Rick Warren gives in his book on how to study the Bible. That’s always been a good starting point for me. I also like it as a pastor because it’s a great starting point for just about anyone in my congregation.
