How to live in 2014? Jesus has some pretty direct things to say about that.
27 “But I say to you who are willing to hear: Love your enemies. Do good to those who hate you. 28 Bless those who curse you. Pray for those who mistreat you. 29 If someone slaps you on the cheek, offer the other one as well. If someone takes your coat, don’t withhold your shirt either. 30 Give to everyone who asks and don’t demand your things back from those who take them. 31 Treat people in the same way that you want them to treat you. In the great aggravation that is called the Kingdom of God, we are to live extraordinary lives. It’s not about being generous to those who can “owe us.” It’s about extravagance toward those who can do nothing in return. Or, if they can do something… it’s probably not very nice.
May 2014 find me blessing instead of cursing.
May I be found living with a generosity that drives just about everyone else crazy.
May I learn to listen more to the Spirit and less to economic conservatives when it comes to the poor and those who beg.
May I live with a generosity that I hope is returned to me, but with a trust in God that says, “If that generosity isn’t returned, I have still lived well.”
In other words, may I truly live life in the power of the Spirit at a level I just haven’t known before.
