Justified Through Faith

Attention all Greek scholars! Figure this one out for me!

Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, (Rom. 5:1, NIV)

Therefore, since we have been made righteous through his faithfulness combined with our faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. (Rom. 5:1, CEB)

Therefore, since we have been declared righteous by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, (Rom. 5:1, NET Bible)

Faith? Whose faith? There is an interesting variety here.

    While not a Greek scholar, I know a little, maybe just enough to mess it up. Either way, the Greek reads:

    Δικαιωθέντες οὖν ἐκ πίστεως εἰρήνην ἔχομεν πρὸς τὸν θεὸν διὰ τοῦ κυρίου ἡμῶν Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ

    with a word-for-word translation of:

    Justified therefore by faith peace we have with God through the Lord our Jesus Christ.

    I would defer to reading the above blog post as it gives quite a good way of understanding the verse and why understanding exactly whose faith/faithfulness Paul is speaking about is difficult to know.

    There are three prepositions of note here:
    1. EK PISTEWS – “from faith” EK is out from, by way of, denotes direction and origin.
    2. PROS TON THEON – “from God”. PROS with an accusative is ‘toward’ or denoting a friendly relationship, ‘with’.
    3. DIA TOU KURIOU – “through the Lord”. – DIA with genitive = by means of/through.
