Being Prepared to Lose

I was asked yesterday about the church and influencing society and culture. When will the church be the “go to” place for a culture to come? When a society is failing and they are looking for answers, when will the church be the place they turn?

Having just finished the series on Daniel and knowing the influence of Daniel and his companions, my answer was this: “When we are prepared to lose.”

  1. What do you mean by that?

    1. Daniel was prepared to speak the truth and be put to death. So were Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah.

American Christians want to WIN. We want legislation overturned. We want court cases decided in our favor.

We still aren’t prepared to lose. We aren’t ready for the “but if not” of the equation.

  2. Revelations indicates that the world will crash in a hail of plagues and judements. Jesus will then return, but after only 1/6 of the population remains. Then there is Gog and MaGog and the final end. God’s demand is faith and obedience unto death, but certainly not any kind of standing victory.

At this point, I question the common Christian idea of “bringing God’s kingdom to man”. Maybe we are just “showing God’s kingdom to man” by our faith and actions. The work for us is the same, but the expectation is different. Sometimes, through faith more people will be fed. However, there will always be hungry among us, and sick, and evil. The expectation of victory in culture or society is a bit off. The victory is in faith alone, unto death even.
