Obedience

11 Teach me your way, Lord,
so that I can walk in your truth.
Make my heart focused
only on honoring your name. (Ps. 86:11, CEB)

Psalm 86 is more like a Psalm of complaint. Some translations give it a nice feel. The Common English Bible and NET Bible bring out more of the “complaint.”

“Listen O Lord! Answer me!” (v. 1, NET Bible)

In his complaint, David also reminds God of his loyalty (v. 2).

But the promise to maintain loyalty is also there. Verse 11 brings it out.

The crux of discipleship and following God is obedience. It is not about mental ascent to a set of beliefs. It is not making sure those checklists of beliefs are memorized and recited.

It is obedience.

Follow-through matters in discipleship. He is our King. Mental ascent to his rule and reign is not enough. We follow him with all we are… or we are not followers.

One response to “Obedience”

  1. I agree with you very much on this one. I also wonder why some people in the Church think they have it all right while others have it wrong. Orthodox is orthodox and there is a lot of room for movement within this. You nailed it when you said, the Kingdom is bigger than us, so how could any one of us get it all?

The whole idea of learning to disagree resonates with me also. I usually wonder what happened to true tolerance where people disagree, but still accept each other. Instead we have the new tolerance which means little more than agreeing with the leftist agenda. I think that is what it really comes down to, we need to learn to disagree, we need to learn true tolerance.
