In my world history class today I had them talk about “Person of the Year” for 2012. I gave them a few names from Time‘s list of possibilities, then had them nominate a few more.
Hands down, our winner is Malala Yousafzai. She is now 15 years old and a voice of freedom in Pakistan. She has been threatened by the Taliban for wanting to do radical things like get an education.
Her courage to go to school has threatened the Taliban so much she was shot in broad daylight leaving school one day a few weeks ago. She is recovering in London, and now serves as a symbol of freedom.
I was so glad to read the thoughts of students who were impacted by Malala.
Let freedom ring.
