25 In the beginning, Lord,
you laid the earth’s foundation
and created the heavens.
26 They will all disappear
and wear out like clothes.
You change them,
as you would a coat,
but you last forever.
27 You are always the same.
Years cannot change you.
28 Every generation of those
who serve you
will live in your presence. (Psalm 120:25-28, CEB)
As humans, especially in “first world” situations, we are always bent on change. In fact, we change so quickly now, we have no “style” that is “current.” We’ve retro’d the 70s, the 80s, back to the 50s, then the 60s, and we just keep cycling things through, and that’s just in the past 10 years.
We shift and dance and flit from one thing to the next. We are not very stable people.
What we need to realize is that stability is possible. Our eyes need to move from gazing at the shifting sand around us to the One who is eternal. We gaze at the One who set the foundation of the earth in place. We gaze at the one that cannot be changed by the years. We can then find “home.”
“Our hearts are restless until they rest in you.” (Augustine)
In this restless season of “Christmas” let us find rest for our souls in the One who is coming again.
