Centered in on Christ

Colossians 3 is a great passage for spiritual formation. The “nuts and bolts” of living life in Christ are here. Spiritual formation helps us center in on what is essential.

Center to our lives is where we fix our gaze. It is Christ. It is Christ exalted.

Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God. (Col. 3:1-3, NIV)

What we desperately need in our day is having our lives centered on TRUTH. We are dead to the old life and in Christ we have our lives folded into a new reality. That is truth.

This is the essential necessity of the Word of God. We need the the written Word leading us to the Living Word.

Our exercise of saturating ourselves with the Word by reading the New Testament this summer is vital. We must understand who we are , and there is no better way to do that than be centered in on the Word of God.

Live in truth. It will indeed set you free.

One response to “Centered in on Christ”

  1. Last weeks readings along with the gospel of Luke have me thinking about who we are in Christ. What has he called us to. It shouldn’t come as a surprise, but we struggle with this. Jesus told us that having comfort in this life would be our reward. Paul informs us that we are slaves of Christ. When I read those passages I recalled your message regarding the Galley Slaves and how they had 1 purpose and they fulfilled it. They knew no other life.

Paul’s audience understood what slavery looked like. If they weren’t a slave, my guess is they knew someone who was or who owned one. It was real to them. I have SO much freedom, I have a hard time understanding what truly a slave is. I think this is so hard to grasp and live, especially as an American. As a slave, I don’t have options, choices, or freedoms. My life is dictated to me. What time I get up, the work I am asked to do. My master doesn’t consult with me to see if I like the work or if I feel up to it. My master tells me what to do and I do it.

This concept I can understand logically, but Jesus words keep coming to me. Be careful when you have riches, for my comfort and reward I have already recieved. Logically I get slavery in Christ, in practice, I am working to understand it.
