Hey, Jude!

That’s about all I know of that song… the title. (I grew up fairly fundamentalist. I’ve dealt with it. You deal with it. 😉 )

We probably know more about the song than the biblical book. It’s quite the odd collection of thoughts. I really ponder the thought of Michael in an argument with the devil over the body of Moses…

But there is great wisdom in this short letter. The end of the letter is a great reminder to us as believers in this Advent season:

20 But you, dear friends: build each other up on the foundation of your most holy faith, pray in the Holy Spirit, 21 keep each other in the love of God, wait for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ, who will give you eternal life. 22 Have mercy on those who doubt. 23 Save some by snatching them from the fire. Fearing God, have mercy on some, hating even the clothing contaminated by their sinful urges. (Jude 1:20-22, CEB)

For those walking with Christ, build them up. Keep them in the love of God!

For those who are struggling along, and even battling doubt, have mercy. Walk with them. Carry them along. Stay strong.

Walk in mercy. Those who are really struggling, see if you can snatch them from the fire. Stay in prayer. Stay in the power of the Holy Spirit. Walk in the power of the One who has come to set the captive free.

Strong encouragement in a season of hope.

  1. I was impressed by one of my lecturers at college who is studying the “wilderness experience.” When her dad died, she said to her church leaders / congregation. “I don’t have faith to continue walking with God right now. I need you, ,my church to carry me along and have faith for me.”

When her church said yes to her request, she found it the most freeing experience to be able to truly express her grief and doubts and truly lament.

Jude has a lot of pastoral wisdom indeed.

  2. What a powerful testimony.
